Does Medicare Cover That?
A question that comes up repeatedly with my clients is about certain services that Medicare does NOT cover.
Most of us are aware that Medicare won’t cover some services like acupuncture, or cosmetic surgery.
Here are some other things that Medicare Parts A and B do not cover:
– Refraction Eye Exam:
The refraction test, also called a vision test, is performed as part of a normal eye examination to determine whether an individual has normal vision. It also may be used to determine the prescription for eyeglasses or contact lenses. The test involves looking through a device called a phoropter to read letters or recognize symbols on a wall chart through lenses of different strength which are contained within the device. The typical bill you’ll receive for a refraction eye exam from a medical provider is about $35.
*** Medicare Part B DOES cover an annual eye exam for diabetic retinopathy. All people with Part B who have diabetes are covered.
– Prescription Medications Administered Orally In An Outpatient Setting:
Generally, prescription and over-the-counter drugs you get in an outpatient setting (like an emergency department), sometimes called “self-administered drugs,” aren’t covered by Part B. Also, for safety reasons, many hospitals have policies that don’t allow patients to bring prescription or other drugs from home. If you have Medicare prescription drug coverage (Part D), these drugs may be covered under certain circumstances, or they may not be. You’ll likely need to pay out-of-pocket for these drugs and submit a claim to your drug plan for a refund.
– Dental Services:
Medicare doesn’t cover most dental care, procedures, or supplies. Things like cleanings, fillings, tooth extractions, dentures, dental plates, or other dental devices are not covered. Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) will cover certain dental services that you get when you’re inpatient in the hospital.
